So much has happened in a year! I've been thinking of doing a little more blogging, mostly just for myself to get thoughts out. I've had a few friends tell me that I should write about favorite eating establishments, and new music that I'm listening to and have discovered. Music is an easy one for me, outside of God and my wife, it's my passion. Here's a few things I've been listening to lately.

Slash's new record has been pretty constant in the rotation. If you're a fan of straight up "no holds barred" R&R with pretty killer production, this one is for you. The record is 14 songs with 13 different load vocalists including Ozzy, Chris Cornell, Kid Rock, Adam Levine (Maroon5) and oddly enough Fergie. The Fergie track "Beautiful Dangerous" is smokin'. I'm not a Fergie fan usually either, but she kills this song. With Lala no longer around, I must resort to youtube for a sample of the song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LF94LgYDMQ
The Bird and the Bee have released a new record called "Interpreting the Masters, a tribute to Hall and Oates". Growing up in the 80's, you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing one of the many hits from Hall and Oates. I can still remember being in first grade hearing "You Make My Dreams" and loving it. I was hooked from that point on. Now some almost 30 years later, The Bird and The Bee releases a covers record of 8 Hall & Oates favorites, and one new song with mentions to Hall & Oates hits. Check out this cover.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUl8DC_yQ6g

There are quite a few more that I'm loving including the new Hanson release, but thought these 2 would be a good diverse start :)

Also lookout for the new Maroon5 single and album coming soon. Produced by Mutt Lange, it sounds great!

Wow..it's been a while!

So here it is June 16th, 6 mos after my last post. My how time flies.

Quite a few things have happened over these 6 mos. In Jan., I started a new company with 3 friends called The Caliber Group. We combined our respective management roster's together to form one company. We're still in the process of signing new acts and building the company.

Secondly, in Feb. we moved into our first house! It wasn't like we were looking to buy, we just happened to take a drive one cloudy Jan day to the metropolis of Spring Hill TN and happened upon a neighborhood and decided to look. Next thing you know, 3 weeks later we are applying for a mortgage. One month later, we moved in. We love our new home, having room to spread out and finding things we forgot we had. I especially love our bonus room (leather couch, flat screen TV, stereo and the XBOX 360), it's heaven.

Third, in March Bonnie and I decided to adopt..another dog. As I type this, Carly the Cavalier (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) sits in lap antsy as can be, climbing on the keyboard making me correct typo's as she hits keys. This is Bonnie's first puppy, so she's getting to learn about the joys of puppy pee and just how much energy a now 4 month old puppy really has. Bonnie has also taught her 3 tricks. Buddy the big brother loves his sister, he says it keeps him young.

Finally and most importantly, in May we celebrated our one year anniversary on May 10th. We celebrated by taking a trip to Sanibel Island FL for a week. It was an amazing trip filled with rest, food, sun, naps, yahtzee, naps, scrabble, Law and Order Marathons (I think we watched 15 that week), alligators, naps, great food, bicycle rides and so much more.

It's hard to believe that a year has flown by. I can honestly say it was the best year of my life spending 365 days with my best friend and the love of my life. Some say the first year of marriage is the toughest, I only knew it as paradise. We learned so much about each other, about marriage and about love. I'm thankful that we went into the marriage as prepared as we could be with:
1. Being surrounded by amazing parents who portrayed great marriages
2. Amazing pre-marital counseling by Tom Tyndall at our church, Crosspoint Community
3. Realistic expectations that not everything would be exactly the way we wanted

The summer is ahead of us and lot's to do. Bonnie just got a new promotion (Woohoo!). She'll start traveling next week for her job. Her first trip is a rough one...to Boca Raton FL. In August we'll go to Las Vegas to celebrate our friend Brittany's 21st bday party.

Thanks for reading, I'll try not to wait so long next time!

Songs that I liked this year..

Here's a list of some of the songs I feel rose to the top this year.

Eric Hutchinson- Rock N' Roll

AC/DC- Rock N' Roll Train

Britney Spears- Womanizer

David Archuletta- Crush

Eagles- Too Busy Being Fabulous

Jason Mraz- I'm Yours

Leona Lewis- Bleeding Love

Guns N' Roses- Chinese Democracy

Lincoln Brewster- Today Is The Day

Matt Nathanson- Come on Get Higher

Natasha Bedingfield- Pocketful Of Sunshine

Nickelback- Gotta Be Somebody

Kings Of Leon- Use Somebody

Pink- So What

Snow Patrol- Take Back The City

Also, I left out one of my album picks for the year:

King's Of Leon
Only By The Night

Up until this record, I never really got into them. With this record, a friend of mine told me I should really take a listen to them, and I'm stoked that I did. "Only By The Night" has been a staple album in my collection this year. It's the perfect fall/ winter record. Memorable melodies that swim in your head and hooks that grab you early on.
Favorites: Sex on Fire, Revelry, Manhattan, Use Somebody

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCZfJ5ai07U

Look back at the year in music

As we near the end of the year, I thought I'd take a second to look back on some key releases for 2008.

Favorites:
ROCK

Extreme- Saudades De Rock
I spent my high school years wearing out the first three Extreme records. Everyone who listened to any radio during that time got barraged with the songs "More Than Words" and "Hole Hearted". My favorite became the III Sides to Every Story album, which I would wear out through the years. This album didn't sell quite as well as the others, with only "Rest In Peace" receiving minor "hit" status.
When I first heard about a new Extreme record, I was both excited and a little skeptical. Luckily, the band didn't let me down. Opening with the song "Star" (first single and video), the record held my attention. The more I listened to it, the more I couldn't get it out of my player. It stays true to who Extreme is, yet bringing a modern element to it (even a country tinged tune). I was lucky enough to see them live in August 2008 in Atlanta with King's X, easily one of the best shows I've seen in a long time.
Favorite cuts: Comfortably Dumb, Learn To Love, Take Us Alive

AC/DC "Black Ice"
Every red blooded American male can attest to riding down the road with the windows down and the stereo cranked up to 10 listening to "You Shook Me All Night Long" and "Back in Black". Odds are good if you like rock music, then you own "Back In Black", in fact worldwide sales of the record have reached over 42 million. Even listening to that album in 2008, one can hear the timeless production and songs that it contains.
Fast forward to 2008. AC/DC released "Black Ice" exclusively at Wal Mart. First week sales saw right at 800,000 sold, with first day sales at 193,000. In this day and age, that's a big accomplishment. Immediately when you push play on this disc and the opening chords of the first single "Rock 'N Roll Train" come blaring out, you know it's still the AC/DC you love, the AC/DC you grew up with. The album doesn't let up from that point till the end. All songs are driving mid-up tempo rockers without a ballad. Brendan O'brien's (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilot's, Bruce Springsteen) production only enhances the art that AC/DC created.
Favorite cuts: Rock 'N Roll Train, Skies On Fire, Spoilin' For A Fight.

POP

Britney Spears "Circus"
Britney Spears first single "... Baby One More Time" hit # 1 out of the gate in October 1998. I actually had a chance to meet her briefly during this time, and from the few minutes I was around her, I found her to be likable and humble. Now over 83 million albums sold worldwide, movies and scandals galore, she's back.
I went into listening to "Circus" with skepticism, having not been a big fan of her last record "Blackout". I knew early on that I liked "Womanizer" (which took a few listens to grow on me), but would this be the only hit on the record? Through the first listen, it became apparent that Britney and the writers were able to capture what her life has been about the past year. "Circus" saw her pairing back up with Max Martin again on the possibly controversial "If U Seek Amy" which is one of the stronger songs on the record.
Favorite cuts: Womanizer, Shattered Glass, Out From Under, If U Seek Amy.

Christian:

Anberlin "New Surrender"
I didn't discover Anberlin until I heard a few cuts from their "Never Take Friendship Personal" record. Immediately I connected to the pop hooks, crunching guitars and the singable melodies. I had the chance to catch the band on their "Cities" tour last year, and left the show very impressed.
2008 saw Anberlin leaving their long time label home Tooth And Nail, and joining up with Universal Republic and releasing "New Surrender". The record is a little more "pop" leaning than the previous releases. After spending a few weeks with only "New Surrender" in my player, I had time to dissect the record. Most of the record is from a relationship perpective, including a re-recording of "Feel Good Drag" from "NTFP".
Favorite cuts: Breaking, Blame Me Blame Me, Breathe

DecembeRadio "Satisfied"
This one holds a special place for me. I helped "discover" this band in 2004 while visiting my friends Scotty Wilbanks at his home studio. He introduced me to 3 "good ole boys" from Virginia that he was producing, and let me hear some rough tracks of their demo. I chased Scotty down for 6-7 months to get a copy of this demo, finally finding one at the GMA convention in 2005. Immediately I went back to the label I was working with (Slanted) and told them we had to sign this band. After months of negotiations, we finally signed DecembeRadio. We released their debut album in 2006. Just months after the release, we found out this record was nominated for a Grammy award in the best Rock/ Gospel category. This afforded me my dream of attending the Grammy awards and the parties that surround it.
2008 brought their sophmore release, "Satisfied". The band once again delivered a "pedal to the metal roll down the windows and crank it up" record. One listen to the title track and you'll be hooked. They even ventured down the pop/country road with "Be Alright". Great job Dradio and Scotty! "I'm Glad I saw the Light, Hank Williams got it right!"
Favorite Cuts: Satisfy, Be Alright, Gasoline, Look For Me (should be a massive hit).

Honorable Mention:

After Edmund "Hello"
This is another record that is close to my heart, as they are another band I helped to "discover". This record was slated to be out in 2007, but the label allowed for more set up and touring and delayed it until Jan 2008. This record is so far outside the Christian bubble it isn't funny. If you like cookie cutter Christian albums, this one isn't for you. Similar to Coldplay, Keane, Snow Patrol with hints of Pink Floyd, don't miss it. It's Grammy Nominated this year!

Country:

Taylor Swift "Fearless"
On the first listen to "Love Story" I was sold. Then when Amazon ran it on their $3.99 special, I knew I couldn't go wrong. I'm glad I picked it up. This is one of those records that we'll be hearing singles from for quite a while.
Favorites: Love Story, White Horse, Fifteen

Phil Stacey "Phil Stacey"
After being a fan of his from American Idol, I was excited to hear this record. I received an advance copy in March this year and couldn't get it out of my CD player. I then had a chance to have lunch with him in April and was very impressed with his heart and what he was about. Unfortunately, the record didn't do well at all, which is a shame.
Favorites: It's Who You Know, If You Didn't Love Me, Looking Like Love.

Presidential Race

As I sit and watch the tail end of the election results, Obama is winning 207-138. For most of the day I've been almost in a state of depression about the election.
Tonight, as I took time away from watching the results and took a shower, I began to pray about it. The Lord really spoke to me during this time. He reminded me of a sermon I heard from Pastor Johnny Hunt at First Baptist Woodstock where I attended for many years. Johnny preached that we are instructed from the Bible to pray for our President and leaders of the country.

1 Timothy 2 :1-3 "The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation. This is the way our Savior God wants us to live"

As much as it's in my flesh now to complain, and mope, I know I need to be obedient and pray for Obama as he takes on the leadership of this great nation of ours. It's been "easy" over these past 8 years as President Bush has been in office, a President that has been outspoken about his faith in Christ. Now, as Obama takes office we will begin to learn more about him and his spiritual walk. As Christians, it's our duty to pray for him daily.

Thoughts?

My Bday Weekend

My amazing wife Bonnie surprised me with the best birthday gift this past weekend. For those of you who know me, know that I'm a huge Auburn fan. (Yes, even in years like this one where they aren't doing as well as expected.)

On Friday Oct 10th, we departed Franklin and headed to a bed and breakfast/ lodge outside of Auburn. Then Saturday, we went to Auburn. We got in around 11 AM, and spent the day going in all the Auburn stores, spending time on campus, going to Tiger Walk and to the game. She got us tickets on the 35 yard line, about 11 rows up. Needless to say, this was an amazing gift. After the Auburn game, we made a trip to see my parents in Newnan GA for my mom's bday.

Thanks Bonnie for an amazing weekend. Trips to LA, Vegas, San Diego and Disney World have all happened. In addition to the start of the college and pro football seasons. I'm a huge Auburn fan, as well as having season tickets for the Vandy games. Also, I'm in 2 fantasy leagues, and my wife is in 2 also.
I have managed to sneak in some great new music purchases in the last 2 months.

First off the new Metallica "Death Magnetic"..wow this record sounds great so far. It's heads and tails better than their "St. Anger" record.

In the Christian market, definitely check out the latest from my friends DecembeRadio "Satisfied", to say the record will leave you satisfied is an understatement. Also, the new one from old buds Third Day, "Revelation". IMHO the best record they've turned in in quite a while. Good job Mark. Also spent some time with a friend at Word the other day and he hooked me up with 10 new releases. So far I've spent some time with the new Francesca Battistelli (if you're into piano powered pop ala Sara Bareilles, this one is for you) and Remedy Drive.

More thoughts coming soon! Off to see The Eagles tomorrow and Third Day/ Switchfoot on Saturday and a visit from mom-in law and sis-in law.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://derektn.blogspot.com/2008/09/new-post-can-you-believe-it.html' title='New Post! It was almost my way of being "rebellious" without being over the edge. Sure these bands were "hard rock" or "heavy metal", but really they just played pop songs wrapped up in guitars. Usually they were songs about love, women, cars or just being happy.

One of the bands that I got into in the late 80's was Poison. This was a band who had all the traits of a successful hair band. Great songs, big choruses, and the women loved them. I never got to see them during their "hey day", but since they reformed in '99 with the original lineup I've caught them at least 4x.

I have a good friend that lives in LA who has toured with Poison. He called me a year ago to tell me that CC Deville had just gotten saved. Then June 23rd of this year, he called to tell me that CC showed up at church on 6.22 and rededicated his life. The tour would be hitting Nashville on July 8th, so my friend called CC and put us on the list. I told him I'd love to encourage CC and bring him some books and music to help him in his walk.

Fast forward to last night, July 8th. Bonnie and I made our way down to the Sommet Center. After checking in at will call, we found out that Poison hadn't turned in their guest list yet. At 6:45, I received a call from CC on my cell wanting to know where we were. He sent up his personal assistant to get us and took us back to his dressing room.

This lead to a hour and half converstation about what God is doing in his life. To say this was surreal is an understatement. First off, I'm sitting in the dressing room of one of my favorite band members, then to top it off, he's talking about his salvation experience, and how he's getting chill bumps talking about what God is doing in his life. Then he's asking Bonnie and I questions on how he should handle things. After about an hour, my pastor Pete Wilson and Brian Alexander came down to spend some time with us and CC. CC asked us to watch the show and see if there was anytime we felt that he wasn't honoring God. Wow.

The show was pretty awesome. Filled with all the hits, fist pumping and pyro.

After the show, we went back and spent another 20 min with CC in his dressing room. We were able to share our thoughts on the show, and spend a few more minutes encouraging him. At the end, we all gathered around and prayed for our new brother in Christ. I told CC that Bonnie and I may try to go see them again in Atlanta in a few weeks, to which he asked me to make sure and hold him accountable when I see him.

All this to say, CC has had a wild ride with his life. He's sold over 25 million records, played to millions of people, and now he's made a new turn in his life for Christ. He's going to have a tough road ahead with the temptations that the road and the lifestyle that he leads brings. Please keep him in prayer as you read this, or hear a Poison song on your local Jack FM or classic rock station.

Below is a video I shot at the show, not the best quality but you can sense the excitement.
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v13.nonxt5.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Db2bdd68ffa0d537c%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329853450%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D8548740679FD813CEDFCAC4EFC7C0E2F70CD399.35CE6CD9A3CCA713D8907E1B55510D9D9BF43575%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Db2bdd68ffa0d537c%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DWiZUO1dLh-xfj83gxEDzZ75Jku4&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Thankfulness..looking back, the present and looking ahead.

One thing I've been thinking about recently has been the subject of thankfulness. It seems these days that many people really forget the "art" of being thankful. In the current age of take what you can get, and what's mine is mine, thankfulness sometimes takes a back seat. Many times, people seem to forget that there are many blessings in life that we aren't guaranteed, and aren't deserved in most instances. It's hard to be prideful when you're thankful. I think that when you are thankful, it almost always includes humbleness.
In looking back over my life, and specifically the last year, I know that I don't deserve everything that's happened to me, and all the opportunities that have been laid in front of me. It seems like God was and is continually opening doors and saying try this. I feel that I'm being blessed far greater than I could've ever imagined.
2007 was a year that turned out to be a landmark year for me in a few ways. Growing up being a massive music fan, I never would have dreamed that I would be able to attend the Grammy Awards. That opportunity happened for me in Feb., when a band I worked with called DecembeRadio was nominated for the Best Rock Gospel Grammy. I was honored with the opportunity to fly to Los Angeles and attend the awards and all the parties and festivities surrounding them. The whole time I was in LA., I felt like a child on Christmas morning. As an added bonus, I got to meet Martin Sheen and his son Emelio Estevez at our hotel. Being a fan of the West Wing, this was pretty amazing to me.

The day of the Grammy Awards , I received an added bonus. As if just attending the Grammy's wasn't enough, I got to walk the red carpet with the band as they did interviews with everyone from The Tonight Show, to Entertainment Tonight, to Extra. Behind us on the carpet was Little Big Town and Buckcherry. During the pre-show awards, which is where 90% of the awards are handed out, we were just feet away from legends like Tony Bennett and Smokie Robinson. Unfortunately, Dradio didn't win the award as it went to Jonny Lang.
The televised awards show was very cool, as I got to see The Police's first live performance in years as they kicked off the show with "Roxanne".
The after party was fun, as we got to see Chaka Kahn and Kool and The Gang play.

In May, I left Slanted/ Spring Hill to manage my friends Jump5. One of the first things I got to do was travel to Norway with the group for a series of concerts. Norway was incredible. How often do you get to travel internationally and get paid for it at the same time. wow.
The summer consisted of me putting together the farewell album (Hello & Goodbye) and tour for the fall. On the tour, I finally got to go to San Francisco, which is a city I've always heard about just how amazing it is.

For me, the biggest event of the year started with a phone call I received on Sept 3rd from Sammy Ward. Sammy has been a great friend of mine for over 10 years, and I also manage his music career. He had been playing a retreat for First Baptist Nashville over the Labor Day weekend. He called to say he found me about the student ministry assistant, Bonnie. He said he had been watching her life for a few years, and loved how she carried herself. He felt that she would be great for me. He asked her if she was dating anyone, and if she liked older guys. She said no to dating anyone and sure to older guys. So he gave me her email address. The next day I emailed her to introduce myself. She emailed back the next day. After a week of emailing, we became facebook friends. We had our first "blind date" on Sept 13th at Fido's, then went out again on the 17th with a group of friends, then again on the 20th to a Predators game.

Needless to say, we hit it off. We officially became a couple on Sept 23rd, at around 1045 PM.
After about a month of dating, we both knew we had found the one, or T O as we both called it. We were engaged on Dec 21st. Needless to say that was the only Christmas present I needed.
We were married this May 10th.

To say I'm thankful for Bonnie is an understatement. She's the completion to who I've always wanted to be. Every day she fills my life with love, happiness and contentment. I don't ever want to take her for granted.

On the professional level, I'm getting to do what I love. Each day I consider a blessing.

All this to say, too many times I think people tend to focus on the negative parts of life, the things that drag us down. Take a minute to reverse that, be thankful for the things in the past, the present, and what God has for you around the next corner. When we start thinking that we deserve certain thing, that's where trouble can creep in.

The Story Continues..

So sorry it took a few days to continue the story. On Friday, Bonnie I had the chance to go to another taping of PBS's "Songs and Lyrics" show. The taping on Friday afternoon was a special one for Bonnie, as it was her first time to see and hear Mindy Smith in a live setting. It was really fun for me to watch Bonnie be giddy about something like this. Mindy ended up singing one of her favorite songs called "Raggedy Ann" which made Bon really happy. After the performance, Mindy stayed around the stage to meet and take photos with people. Bonnie was a little nervous about meeting her, but after some prodding she gave in. She ended up getting 20-30 seconds with her, a great photo and a memory that will last a long time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzu3Ihyq50c

Very Fun Night!

Last night was one of those nights that I will remember for a long time.

During our small group get together at the park on Tuesday, Lee Steffen mentioned that there was a taping for PBS Storytellers type show going on this week, and that he had an email to get us on the VIP list. Come to find out, Thursday night (last night) was Richard Marx/ Kenny Loggins and 3 Doors Down. Happens that I've always been a fan of Richard and Kenny so I knew it was going to be an amazing night. Bonnie and I went down with our friends Greg, Robin and Brittany. On the way down to the taping, I got a call at 430 that Metallica was going to be doing a private show at the Basement Club here in town. The club only holds a couple of hundred, so it was going to be amazing to see a band of this magnitude at such a small place. I knew that we already had tickets to the taping, so we proceeded to that thinking how cool the Metallica show would've been.
We ended up getting front row (plenty of camera time, I'll be the chunky one next to my beautiful wife)for the taping. The show was great, each of the 3 did 5 songs a piece. I won't spoil the songs so you can be surprised when you catch it on tv soon.
After the show all the artists hung out, so Bonnie encouraged me to go down and get a photo with Richard Marx.

We then left for home. On the way back, Bonnie had to stop by her old apartment. The route we took had us going by the Basement club. As we drove by, all the busses were still there, so we turned in and parked. There were some people waiting around outside so we thought, why not. Turns out, we got to meet Robert (bass player) and then James (lead singer/guitar) for Metallica.
What really surprised me was how nice they were. I guess you always think these "heavy metal rock stars" are going to be angry etc., this was not the case. In fact, Bonnie made a comment that her camera battery was dying almost under her breath, and James looks around and says "who's camera battery is dying"?
Last night once again showed me how amazing a wife I have. It was getting late as we were driving by the Basement, and she could've easily said she was tired and had to get up early. She didn't, her immediate reaction was to turn in and wait as long as it took, smiling and being amazing the whole time. She showed me love and unselfishness in that instance last night.
Today we got to the TV taping again. Just so happens today Bonnie's favorite artist Mindy Smith is singing. It's fun to see her excited and almost nervous about it. Hopefully I'll have a new story and photo to share tomorrow!

I really love what I do..

It's really a blessing when you can take a step back and look at what you do for a living, and be thankful for it. Far too often growing up, I had friends or family members who didn't really like what they did for work, but did it for the money, or because it was the only thing they knew how to do.
Ever since I was young, I always dreamed of working in music, but thought it would never happen. Now here I am in my 16th year of working in music in some sort or another. I don't take it for granted. I know there are many who may be smarter and could do a better job, but for some reason God has allowed me to do what I'm passionate about.
All that brings me to tonight. One of the artists' that I manage, guest sang the National Anthem tonight at the Nashville Sounds baseball game. If you've known me for any length of time, you know that two of my biggest passions are music and baseball. Before they sang the Anthem, we got to be on the field for 10 min. That's a pretty amazing feeling. I think the high point for me was taking Bonnie on the field with me. This was a special occasion for me, but getting to have my wife with me made it all the more special. Having Bonnie around to go to events like tonight, and concerts that I get to attend has been amazing for me, because I get to watch her light up, and even get a little giddy at times. If I ever forget just how amazing it is to do what I do, and ever take it for granted, all I have to do is look at her live the experiences through her again for the first time. This weekend, Bonnie and I get to fly to Portland Oregon to meet with a young 13 year old pop singer, and to meet with her family. Wow.

To sum it up, life is too short not to do something you love. I always heard, "find something you love doing, then find a way to get paid." God gave you/me desires and passions, and made us good at certain things. Figure out what those are and dive in with all you have.

Thoughts from an old song

While driving back on Sunday from Atlanta, I was going through my IPOD and came across a song I hadn't heard in a long time. Since I'm a wise man and married a woman 10 years younger, I figured the song from the nineties would be right about the time to take her down memory lane.
I never really paid much attention to the song, until Sunday. There's some good points to take to heart. What areas of this song could be applied to you?

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be
it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
than my own meandering
experience…I will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.
But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really looked….
You’re not as fat as you imagine. Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing everyday that scares you Sing Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours. Floss. Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes
you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with
yourself. Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements. Stretch Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your
life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they
wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year
olds I know still don’t. Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone. Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe
you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky
chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t
congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your
choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s. Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever
own.. Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them. Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly. Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for
good. Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the
people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you
should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and
lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you
knew when you were young. Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live
in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel. Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders. Respect your elders. Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
might run out. Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will
look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
it’s worth. But trust me on the sunscreen…

Weekend..

Great weekend. Bonnie and I started off the weekend on Friday by driving to Chattanooga. Halfway between Nashville and Chattanooga, we stopped at this small winery in Manchester TN.
We found a great seafood place in downtown Chattanooga to eat at Friday night. On Saturday, one of the artists' I manage, Nate Huss played JFest with his band. There was around 3000 people there when he played at 1145 which was pretty incredible. After Jfest, we made our way down to Atlanta to spend time with my mom and dad, and to pick up our dog Buddy who my parents have been dog sitting for 3 weeks.

We made it home tonight in time to drop Buddy off, then head to church. This is going to be a very convicting series. It's called Sync. It's basically about how many of us are stale in our spiritual walks, and not really making an intention to be about Christ in all we do, 100 %. I love Pete's honesty in way he openly shares where he is in his life and his spiritual walk. Far too often growing up, I had a vision that my pastor or spiritual leaders were always "holy" (almost spiritual supermen) and never admitted their spiritual struggles. It was refreshing to hear Pete talk about where he is Spiritually right now. I'm sure he'll get some "heat" and flack from some of the church body for it. Maybe that's the way those people outwardly express the conviction they're feeling.

Looking forward to what's ahead!

Hair Bands

Just finished coffee with my good friend Shimmy. Always good to catch up with him.

We spent quite a bit of time as usual talking hair bands. Don't laugh, you know deep down you love the songs.

One thing I've noticed is how many people don't know these bands are still around, or putting out good records. Check out the new ones from Whitesnake, as well as Loverboy (not a hair band, but a really good rock band). Also on tour this summer, the reformed Warrant (original lineup) with Cinderella and Lynch Mob. My amazing wife and I are going to see the tour in TX.

To me, the music and bands take us to happy times.
